What is Fenceline Monitoring?

Fenceline Monitoring is a powerful tool to help you obtain information about any air pollutants which may be present at the fenceline. Fenceline Monitoring enables you to be environmentally conscious, protect air quality and public health.
The air measurement technology of fenceline monitoring helps determine what chemicals are released and in what amounts, and can help prevent a problem. 

To be environmentally conscious and compliant, each client must first be aware of their emissions. Noticing these issues and fixing them can save time, money, and the environment while keeping you in compliance.
The US EPA has specified 12 to 24 diffusive samplers must be collected on a bi-weekly basis to monitor concentrations around the fenceline of every refinery property. The number of samples is dependent on the size of the refinery. To remain compliant, samples must be controlled to assure the number of excess emissions of fugitive sources and if any are significant and needing attention.
EMSI offers Fenceline Monitoring services on a bi-weekly frequency. The client will determine where along the fenceline the samples are to be taken. The tubes are placed and then collected and sent to the lab for accurate data analysis. Each of these tubes measures the air and what, if any, pollutants it contains.
Fenceline monitoring will ensure proposed standards are met, and neighboring communities are not being exposed to unintended emissions. This method helps control emissions. Fenceline monitors are placed around the facility and data is collected. Corrective actions are made if the levels exceed a rolling annual recommended average.

Why Fenceline Monitoring?

Air pollution is a great danger we are currently facing on earth. The saddest part of it is, this is something caused by humans, and is preventable if the right measures are taken.

A lot of people and companies are beginning to see beyond the profit line and recognize the fact that we all owe it to ourselves to keep the air we depend on as clean as possible. This has caused people to take note of the level of pollution they produce and investigate how to curb it.

As it is, not all the pollution in a facility comes from the main smokestacks. A lot of these air pollutants are from undetected leaks from the seals, pipes and various locations throughout a facility. There is, therefore, a cogent need for fenceline monitoring to be able to detect these leaks and fix them as early as possible. 

Fortunately, utilizing advancements in technology, there are now high tech air measurement devices that can quickly help in identifying where the leaks are originating at a plant, as well as identify the chemicals being released.

The prompt and immediate fixing of these leaks will go a long way to protect the health of the workers at the plant, the immediate community, and the entire planet at large.

An example of the technology used in fenceline monitoring is a low priced passive sampler. This sampler is filled with materials that absorb carbon. These are hung around the facility fenceline and exposed to air. The samples are sent to the lab for analysis typically after two weeks.
